Who Are We?
THE FLAG & GENERAL OFFICERS' NETWORK broad mission is to provide a social and War Veteran's network for all Flag and General Officers of the U. S. Armed Forces [Pay Grade O-7 and above], active duty, Guard & Reserve, and retired. It is structured to be operated BY Flag & General Officers FOR Flag & General Officers. Since all Flag and General Officers serve in uniform for 30+ years, all are War Veterans. Sub-Missions include fostering and promoting continued military war veterans comradery among the membership, support for veterans memorial ceremonies and observations, and support for the widows and orphans of fellow war veterans.
War Veterans, as the term and classification of War Veterans is defined by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service, are persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, with those periods specified by the Internal Revenue Service as:
- April 21, 1898 through July 4, 1902;
- April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918;
- December 7, 1941 through December 31, 1946;
- June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955;
- February 28, 1961 through May 7, 1975, in the case of a veteran who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period;
- August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975;
- August 2, 1990 and ending on the date prescribed by Presidential Proclamation or by law
THE FLAG & GENERAL OFFICERS' NETWORK began in 1995 as an informal social networking group formed by Navy Retired Rear Admirals Charles "Chuck" McGrail, a naval aviator, and James "Jim" Carey, a naval surface warfare officer. The initial purpose was to simply maintain and retain the friendships and war veterans comradery that all of us experienced during our military careers and to expand those friendships and networks into the other services for those of us that did not have the opportunity to meet fellow flag and general officers of the other services during our days in uniform. This small and hearty band of warriors experienced steady growth and a wonderful comraderie until Chuck McGrails untimely death, whereupon the organization "took a rest" for several years. Quarterly networking receptions were resumed in 2005 at the request of the membership, and steady and increasing growth has continued into 2009 where membership now approaches 2000. With this increased size and growth, a more formal organizational structure was formed in 2008 and TFGON was officially incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a not-for-profit war veterans organization.
The organization is currently managed by the remaining original Founder, Rear Admiral [Ret.] Jim Carey, and Service Section Liaison Officers have been appointed to provide an improved service-specific focus and liaison with each military branch of service. The outreach being accomplished by these Service Section Liaisons is resulting in further increased growth of the organization and a much closer relationship with the active leadership of each branch of service, the service academies, and our fellow war veterans. Further, given the fact that each TFGON member has served in uniform for 30+ years, all are war veterans as that term is defined by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service. TFGON is an approved IRS 501.c.19 War Veterans Organization and as such is eligible for tax-deductible donations and is authorized to engage in active participation with the U. S. Congress and the federal government on all matters related to the U. S. Armed Forces, national defense, homeland security, and veterans affairs.
